What the Pollen Index measures

The weather app tells you what is outside. It tells you nothing about your home.

Most people think of pollen as an outdoor problem. But studies show indoor pollen concentrations can reach 80 percent of outdoor levels. Pollen comes in through your windows, your ventilation system, and on the clothes you wear. Once inside, it sits on your floors, your curtains, and your bedding. Every time someone walks through the room, it goes back into the air.

What happens to that pollen once it is inside your home depends entirely on your indoor conditions. Some environments keep it largely inert. Others cause it to fragment into particles fine enough to reach deep into your airways. A few make the whole reaction worse through pollutants that prime your immune system to overreact.

Which plans include the Pollen Index?+
The Pollen Index is available on Guard, Command, and uHoo Aura. Home users on Guard and Command get all four health indices: Pollen, Mold, Virus, and Influenza. For businesses, it is part of the uHoo Aura suite. If you are on Sense and want access, you can upgrade to Guard from your account at any time.
Does the index detect actual pollen?+
No. uHoo does not identify or count pollen grains. The index measures the indoor conditions that determine whether pollen stays relatively harmless or becomes a problem: humidity, temperature, ventilation, particulate levels, and the pollutants that amplify how your airways react. Think of it less as pollen detection and more as knowing whether your home is making things better or worse for allergy sufferers.
If the pollen comes from outside, why does what is inside matter?+
Because most of your exposure happens indoors. Studies show indoor pollen concentrations can reach 80 percent of outdoor levels, and pollen settled on floors and textiles gets resuspended back into the air for days after outdoor levels have dropped. The outdoor forecast tells you what is in the air outside. It says nothing about what is in the room you sleep in.
What is the single most effective thing I can do to lower my score?+
Humidity control. Getting relative humidity into the right range stops pollen from both drying out and shattering into fine particles, and from swelling and rupturing. Both extremes release more allergenic material than the middle range does. Improving ventilation to bring CO₂ down is the second most impactful change. Running a HEPA air purifier adds a third layer by physically removing particles from the air. The white paper covers the specific targets for each.
Why are nitrogen dioxide and ozone in the model?+
Because they change how badly you react to pollen even when the pollen load is the same. NO₂ from gas cooking primes your airways to be more reactive. Ozone modifies pollen proteins so they trigger a stronger response and also irritates airway tissue on its own. A room with elevated NO₂ or ozone turns a manageable pollen day into a worse one. Both are measurable and both are worth tracking.
Is the index useful in winter when there is no outdoor pollen?+
Yes. Pollen that came in during spring and summer is still sitting in your carpets, curtains, and furniture. Every time someone walks through the room or you run the heating, some of it goes back into the air. In a dry, sealed winter home, conditions can actually favour allergen release even when nothing is flowering outside. The index runs daily from your live sensor data regardless of season.
