What is RESET certification?
RESET, which stands for “Regenerative Ecological Sustainable Ecosystem Technology” is the world’s first sensor-based and performance-driven program that focuses on data quality and data transparency to help built environments become healthy and sustainable.
For RESET, we cannot effectively solve what we cannot measure and that data is essential to building awareness and discovering optimal solutions to our problems.
Benefits of RESET Certification
Getting RESET certified isn’t just about checking boxes—it’s about creating spaces that genuinely support health, efficiency, and long-term value. Here’s what makes it worth considering:
Healthier Occupants
At its core, RESET is all about people. It focuses on real-time data to ensure indoor air quality meets high standards. That means fewer sick days, better focus, and a more comfortable space for everyone—whether it’s an office, store, or shared building.
Reduced Operational Costs
Better air quality can lead to more efficient HVAC performance and smarter energy use. Plus, with live data monitoring, you can spot issues early and avoid costly surprises. Over time, those savings can really add up.
Increased Market Value
Buildings that are certified for health and performance are simply more attractive to tenants and buyers. RESET certification can give your property a competitive edge in a market that’s becoming increasingly health- and sustainability-focused.
Improved Reputation
Being RESET certified shows you care—not just about sustainability, but about the well-being of the people who use your space. That kind of commitment builds trust with tenants, clients, and even your own team.
Compliance and International Recognition
RESET is recognized globally and aligns with other major standards. So whether you’re aiming for WELL, LEED, or other certifications, RESET helps you meet performance goals that matter across the board.
RESET Project Types: CI vs. CS
RESET offers two main project types, depending on what part of the building you’re working with:
- Commercial Interiors (CI)
This applies to a specific part of a building, like an office floor or retail unit. It’s designed for tenants or partial owners who want to improve the spaces they control, even if they don’t own the entire building.
- Core & Shell (CS)
This one’s for landlords or developers who manage the entire building’s structure and systems. It looks at the building as a whole, focusing on things like HVAC and shared spaces that affect all occupants.
Together, these project types help clarify responsibilities between landlords and tenants—making collaboration smoother and building performance more transparent.
RESET Certification Standards
RESET is a performance-based building standard that uses real-time data to measure how a space actually performs—focusing on health, efficiency, and sustainability. The standards are divided into two main parts: Embodies and Operations.
a. Embodies
This focuses on the materials used in a building—what goes into your space.
- RESET Materials
Tracks and manages building materials for health and sustainability. It helps teams choose low-emission, transparent products and build a healthier materials library.
b. Operations
This covers how your building performs day-to-day, using sensors and live data.
1. RESET Air
Measures indoor air quality in real time—looking at PM2.5, CO2, TVOCs, temperature, and humidity. To get certified, projects must meet the standards consistently for at least three months.
2. RESET Energy
Focuses on how efficiently a building uses energy. Tracks metrics like real-time consumption and energy use intensity to support smarter operations.
3. RESET Water (in progress)
Will focus on water quality and consumption, helping ensure safe, sustainable water use.
4. RESET Waste (in progress)
Aims to track and reduce building waste by improving sorting, tracking, and reporting.
How to Apply for RESET Certification
- Work with a RESET Accredited Professional (AP):
Find and team up with a RESET AP to help guide you through every step. - Register Your Project:
Sign up for your project on the official RESET website and pay the registration fee. - Choose What You Want to Measure:
Decide which indoor environmental quality (IEQ) factors—like air quality—you want to track and verify. - Use Approved Devices and Services:
Make sure the monitors and data providers you use are officially accredited by RESET. - Install and Calibrate Monitors:
Follow RESET’s guidelines to set up the monitors properly and ensure accurate readings. - Start Monitoring Your Space:
Send live data to the RESET Assessment Cloud continuously from your monitors. - Submit for Review:
After meeting RESET’s performance targets for at least three months in a row, send your project in for official evaluation.
Why focus on RESET Air certification?
The RESET Air Standard is a data standard for air quality monitoring. It is designed to promote healthy indoor environments by measuring and monitoring key air quality indicators, such as PM 2.5, total volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, and carbon monoxide.
The RESET Air Standard is applicable to two different projects, the Commercial Interiors and Core & Shell.
RESET Air for Commercial Interiors (CI) focuses on the air quality performance of interior spaces. It monitors and communicates the quality of air breathed by building occupants.
For Commercial Interior projects, there are two levels of performance when achieving RESET Air certification – the Acceptable targets and High-Performance targets.
According to RESET, Acceptable targets are requisite; all projects must meet the defined limits. High-Performance targets are listed as a reference for projects striving for more rigorous IAQ goals and/or for projects located in regions where ambient outdoor air quality levels typically stay within recommended health limits.
- PM2.5 – RESET sets the target level for PM2.5 indoors below 35 μg/m3. For High-Performance targets, it should not exceed 12 μg/m3.
- TVOCs – RESET’s ideal level for TVOCs is below 500 μg/m3, and for High-Performance targets, it is below 400 μg/m3.
- Carbon Dioxide – RESET sets the level for CO2 to be below 1,000 ppm, and below 600 ppm for High-Performance targets.
- Temperature and Humidity – RESET does not have any specific requirements for temperature and humidity but both must be continuously monitored as these factors can greatly influence the sensor readings for PM2.5 and TVOCs.
- Carbon Monoxide – RESET strictly recommends maintaining CO levels lower than 9 ppm, and CO monitors are required only in indoor spaces with combustion such as boiler rooms, warehouses, breweries, petroleum refineries, mines, and steel production sites.
RESET Air for Core & Shell (CS) targets the air quality performance in mechanical air systems or HVACs. It monitors and communicates the quality of the air being by the building’s mechanical air and HVAC systems.
- PM2.5 – RESET Air requires PM 2.5 to be below 12 μg/m3 or greater than 75(%) reduction
- TVOCs – less than 400 μg/m3
- Carbon Dioxide – less than 800 ppm
- Temperature and Humidity – Temperature and humidity but both must be continuously monitored as these factors can greatly impact PM2.5 and TVOCs.
